Physiatry
Physiatry is a specialized field of physical medicine
and rehabilitation. A physiatrist is a licensed physician who offers a
broad spectrum of medical services for evaluation and treatment of physical
ailments. A physiatrist may treat patients directly, lead an interdisciplinary
team or act as a consultant. Physiatrists' diagnostic tools are the same
as those used by other physicians, with the addition of special techniques
in electrodiagnostic medicine. These techniques help diagnose conditions
that cause pain, weakness or numbness. For more information regarding physiatry
services at Eastland Medical Plaza, please call 662-2500, ext. 5440.
The goal of physiatry is to help patients achieve
their fullest potential consistent with physiological and anatomical conditions
and environmental limitations. Conditions treated by physiatrists include:
- neuromuscular disorders
- musculoskeletal disorders
- cognitive disorders/head injury
- acute and chronic pain
Evaluation is performed by the physiatrist upon
a physician's referral. A physiatrist works with the patient and the patient's
family to determine realistic rehabilitation goals. Physiatrists often
take responsibility for the rehabilitation aspect of patient care. Evaluation
may include:
- physical
- psychological
- social
- vocational
- educational
- electromyography (EMG)
- nerve conduction studies
Physiatrists may prescribe drugs or assistive
devices, such as a brace or artificial limb, or physical, occupational
or speech therapy.
